 Configuring Device Types and Categories
Solution Device Types and Groups allow you to fully customize the way devices are displayed in your Ubersmith instance. A 'Device Group' is a larger, more general category that might be something like 'Power' or 'Network'. Device Types are contained within a 'Device Category', and might include specific device models like 'APC 7932' or 'Cisco Catalyst Switch'. It should be noted that Device Types and Groups are essential to the creation of Device Type Modules which allow you to monitor bandwidth or reboot devices. Please see this page for information on configuring Device Modules.

Adding a Device Type Group

Navigate to the Device Manager section of 'setup & admin' and click the 'Device Types' link.

Click the "Add New Device Type Group" link.

The resulting popup will have a number of fields which are described below:

Name for (language)
Insert the name of the device type group here.

Metadata
Any metafields you set up in Custom Data will be available here.

Adding a Device Type to a Device Type Group

While in the Device Types section of the Device Manager, click the 'add type' link of a previously created Device Type Group.

The resulting popup will have a number of fields which are described below:

Name for (language)
Insert the name of the device type here.

Metadata
Any metafields you set up in Custom Data will be available here.

Adding a Device Module to a Device Type or Device Type Group

Usually, it will make more sense to add a device module to a Device Type Group, rather than to individual Device Types. Adding the module to the group will affect all Device Types within the group.

While in the Device Types section of the Device Manager, click the 'modules' link of a device type or device type group.

Click the 'add module' link on the next page. The resulting popup will include a number of options which will allow you to configure a module:

Details

Enabled
This option allows you to switch on or off the module in question.

Module
Choose which module you would like to add.

Client Access
This dropdown menu allows you to give or revoke client access to the module in question. If you give the client 'edit' access, you can allow them to modify data output by the module or you can simply allow them to just 'view' it.

Config

This section contains all of the configuration options for the module in question. It also contains the fields which allow your Ubersmith Instance to connect to the appliance machine. These fields should be filled in with the login details provided by your Ubersmith support engineer.

Once you have finished configuring your module, click the 'Save' button (or the 'Save & new' button if you wish to create another module) to finish the process.
